The channel was first launched on December 23, 1996, as AB Sports. AB Sports was created by AB Groupe to be the sports channel for its AB Sat satellite package.
However, the station was too expensive for AB Groupe to run and produced poor viewing statistics due to its program focusing on foreign sports. AB Groupe sold 51% of AB Sports’s capital for $ 39 million to Pathé and then launched television channels. Pathé eventually coined the name of the channel under their brand, becoming Pathé Sport in May 1999, with a program focused on French society, which made the station famous, as a live broadcast of sports events and a variety of sports
